What games/systems are you most interested in/do you collect?
I play Warhammer 40K, Age of Sigmar, flirted with Warmahordes for a bit, X-Wing TMG was big for a minute, all the board games ever, and Sci-Fi RPGs especially Fantasy Flights Star Wars RPGs!
Any specific armies?
NURGLE! All chaos… a ton of Death Guard, like a metric shit ton. Huge Death Guard 30K army, as well as 40K army. Nurgle Daemons for 40K/Sigmar, and just started a Black Legion/Iron Warriors Chaos Space Marine army. For Age of Sigmar I have been running Slaves to Darkness and just picked up a Beasts of Chaos army!! ALL CHAOS, BABY.
What aspect of the hobby are you most interested in?
The people! I love meeting new people and finding common ground while playing the game. That’s what I love most about gaming, it truly does bring people together! I love that people from completely different backgrounds can meet at a table, follow the same set of rules and have a great time and get to know each other in the process. Gaming is powerful that way. It’s also fun to crush your opponents.
What compelled you first start or restart the hobby?
My father was into games growing up, he played a lot of historical games, a lot of 15mm scale shit. He had a ton of it but I never really paid attention. He joined a new gaming group and they started playing Warhammer Fantasy Battle and I thought, okay these models are kind of cool! Then one day he brought home the Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader rulebook. I was like, 10? 11? Something like that… and man that book changed my life. I fucking LOVED that book. I read it nonstop and its just hit me like a ton of bricks. It was so awesome. It captured my imagination like nothing else up to that point. Such an awesome book. Since then I was hooked on 40K and Sci-Fi gaming in general. Been playing pretty much ever since!
Do you have any future plans for your hobby?
I do a podcast and continue pumping that out. Its all about talking with hobbyists and just having a good chat about games and other random shit. I love playing games but I love spreading the hobby even more. I think we have a lot to gain by teaching others how to play and enjoy the hobby. Other than that I will keep playing, painting and coming up with new ways to expand the hobby! I just came up with #BitsHavoc, a competition to build and create a cool kitbash within a limited time frame, where the loser has to destroy their model haha! I like silly stuff like that and it makes the hobby fun, we cant take ourselves too seriously you know.
What sort of materials do you use to create your hobby? How long does it take you to complete a project?
I love RESIN haha. I pour that shit on everything. I do a lot of Nurgle so making slimy and wet things is my specialty. Making pools of goop and whatnot, gluing Nurglings everywhere. Once I get started on a project I get crazy focused and knock things out in a few hours on average. Now, I’m not saying it’s the best paintjobs, but I get shit DONE. Haha.
What inspires you to keep going? Do you admire any other hobbyists?
I’m always inspired by crazy ideas.. the crazier the better. If I think something is funny or just plain unexpected I want to do that. Make silly stuff happen. I admire a ton of other artists. Too many to name cause I would miss someone for sure. I am not the best painter or modeler so I’m always so stoked when I see peoples work… cause I’m like, “Wow how do they do that?”
What do you find most frustrating about the hobby?
The lack of time to do it all! I have too many ideas and projects and just not enough time to make it all happen.
Do you have any tips for any aspiring hobbyists – beyond the usual ‘practice daily’?
My number one tip is to find your own style. It’s cool to learn the styles of others, and to push yourself, but ultimately you should come up with your own style and way of doing things. Don’t hold yourself to anyone elses standard, do your own thing. Find the thing that defines you, and do that.
What is your fondest hobby memory?
When I was about 12 ish I had begun painting all of my Dads models… he was bad at it haha. Like… real bad. So he let me start painting his stuff. He would proudly take his models to the gaming club and show them off, telling people that I painted them. He was always proud of me in that way and that meant a lot. He also got free painting services for years but I’m thinking of sending him an invoice.
Anything else you would like to tell our readers?
Yeah! Please check out the Havoc Cast podcast! I chat with other gamers and hobbyists from all over. Tabletop folks, RPG’ers, dice makers, you name it. I ask them questions much like these and also a lot of random stuff and we always end up having some awesome conversations. I love knowing what makes people tick and how they got into the hobby… everyone has a different perspective and that’s awesome!
