This weeks Fangirl Feature is from Heretic Deb
Hobby showcase! Share with us: Your favourite images
What games/systems are you most interested in/do you collect?
Warhammer 40K for the most part, though I do have a few skeletons for AoS – for old time sakes and so Nagash doesn’t get too lonely.
Any specific armies?
Thousand Sons, Ultramarines, Death Guard, Demons of all flavours. I also have a lot of random minis from all over kicking about because I wanted to paint them!
What aspect of the hobby are you most interested in?
I paint a lot, as some of you will know. I also write stories and read them. I play the odd game here and there but time limits this at the moment. I would like to do more.
What compelled you first start or restart the hobby?
My sister came home one day when I was about 14 and said, ‘Hey, I found this awesome store, you have to come with me to it.’ We went the next day; she bought Nurglings, I bought a banshee and the rest is history. In more modern times, I returned to painting after a stretch of mental illness. I read Horus Rising, and I was thrown into a world that I am still exploring and still enjoying.
Do you have any future plans for your hobby?
Always! My next diorama is going to be amazing (I hope). I have great plans for that.
What sort of materials do you use to create your hobby? How long does it take you to complete a project?
This depends on the project and what other things are going on. It can take a while if it is a large one. As for materials. I use a range of brushes, Rosemary and Co for fine details. Windsor and Newton S7 for everything else. I use Citadel paints for most colours, Game Colour by Vallejo for metallics and a mix of other makes depending on the effect I want. I use brush masters for maintaining all my brushes – this stuff is amazing.
What inspires you to keep going? Do you admire any other hobbyists?
Painting is a calming thing for me to do, something to look forward to at the weekend and evenings if time allows. I admire anyone who sticks at the hobby, everyone who appears on my twitter feed is a constant source of inspiration, from the very beginners to the experts.
What do you find most frustrating about the hobby?
Not having enough time in the day to do it?
Do you have any tips for any aspiring hobbyists – beyond the usual ‘practise daily’?
Don’t be disheartened when you’re looking at other people’s work. It is your own journey and you should only compare yourself to you. How far you have come. Be proud of the small steps!
What is your fondest hobby memory?
‘The Jerks’ – Erebus and Kor Phaeron was the first commission I did and they looked amazing. I am also known for painting galaxies on cloaks and so I am proud of them! Then there was that Golden Daemon entry that I did with Ahriman and the Ahrimen… That was pretty damned awesome!
Anything else you would like to tell our readers?
Keep going; if you never give up, you can never fail!
